Why Act?

Why Should we Act?

  • Owning farmland as open space is not enough–abandoned farmland becomes increasingly difficult and expensive to restore into a productive state
  • Though the State of Connecticut Department of Agriculture set a goal of preserving 86,000 acres of cropland by 2000, as of 2002, only 20% of this goal had been permanently preserved from development
  • Children and adults who are given opportunities to explore the outdoors, learn about natural systems and healthy food production, and develop an understanding of the value of the natural resources around them, are more likely to become physically healthy and environmentally aware
